Early snowfall causes tourist rush in Himachal Pradesh

“Most hotels in Himachal remained completely empty between July and September during monsoon season. The tourist inflow started growing with the beginning of the Navratras. All major tourist destinations including Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Dalhousie are reporting a rise in tourist footfall. These days most of the tourists are coming from West Bengal besides a large number of student groups from different states. Honeymooners are also visiting the state in large numbers,” claimed a source.
President of Federation of Himachal Hotels and Restaurant Association, Gajendra Thakur, said tourist footfall has increased in all the tourist destinations of the state. “Hotels have good bookings throughout this month. We will not say that we have a bumper crowd but still tourists are coming in good numbers. The inflow will increase more after October 21 during Diwali,” he said. Thakur added the weather is pleasant in the state and tourists can see fresh snow in Manali and Lahaul-Spiti.
“Fresh snowfall has doubled the joy of the festive season. People from nearby states are also visiting Himachal to see the snow,” he said. Rohtang pass, which received snow in the last two days, opened for tourists on September 13. A large number of tourists reached the mountain pass to enjoy the snow. Hoteliers say snow is the added advantage for the tourism industry as it is one of the major attractions for tourists.
Hoteliers say they had seen the highest ever tourist crowd in Himachal during festive season last year. If compared to last year, tourist footfall this season is less but still hotels are getting some business. Tourist footfall decreases a week after Diwali but it increases again in December. Himachal witnesses the busiest tourist season between December 21 and January 1 when most hotels remain fully occupied.
