India to become a top-10 global tourist destination, says Tourism Minister

Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has announced that India is on track to become one of the top 10 global tourist destinations within the next five years. He highlighted that the tourism sector's contribution to India's economy is expected to rise from the current 7.9% to over 10% in the near future. This optimistic forecast underscores India's growing appeal as a major travel destination.
Speaking at a recent forum, Shekhawat emphasized the need for private investment to drive this growth, particularly through the public-private partnership (PPP) model. He noted that PPP initiatives are crucial for developing new tourist destinations and resources. The minister specifically highlighted the importance of Buddhist tourism, domestic tourism, and the role of PPP models in expanding India's tourism infrastructure.
According to Shekhawat, India's diverse offerings have captured global interest, as evidenced by a significant 48% increase in online searches for Indian destinations following the COVID-19 pandemic. He predicted a substantial rise in both domestic and international tourism, with domestic tourism playing a central role. Currently, 65% of all inbound tourists visit only seven Indian states, reflecting a concentration of tourist activity in certain regions.
Shekhawat also acknowledged the enthusiasm of Indian states to enhance their tourism sectors and contribute to the national economy. Over the past decade, India has experienced rapid growth, particularly in infrastructure, which has been instrumental in supporting the tourism sector.
The minister praised India's longstanding tradition of attracting travelers from around the world and expressed confidence that with ongoing efforts to promote its attractive destinations, India will surpass the global average in tourism.
He further asserted that India's rich cultural heritage will play a significant role in establishing the country as one of the most respected and desirable travel destinations globally. The combination of India's historical allure and modern advancements is set to position the nation as a leading player in the global tourism industry.
